Are the Best 10/22 Barrels built in Forks, WA?Beyer Barrels, a Local Manufacturer of Lightweight Barrels
The Ruger 10/22 rifle, as Louis Braun notes in the accompanying article in this issue, is a wonderful, proven platform for a great .22 rifle. Like the 1911 pistol or the AR rifle, the 10/22 has more available options for the custom builder than any other .22. Many shooters start their improvement campaign with a new barrel. Those of us who browse Brownells for entertainment have seen pages of 10/22 accessories; there must be three pages of triggers, bolt handles, mag releases and parts, and there are another two pages of barrels. One of the Brownells featured 10/22 barrels is the Beyer Barrels Ultralight Target barrel in .22 LR and .17 HMR.
Brownells has a reputation for offering only the best products so the inclusion of Beyer Barrels in their catalog is in itself quite an endorsement of the quality of this item. But did you know that Beyer Barrels is one of our WAC members and table vendors? As I toured the last Puyallup event, I stopped to examine some attractive aluminum 10/22 barrels, and who should I meet but Clint Beyer of Beyer Barrels. We talked a bit about his barrels and I had a chance to examine his product. Impressive indeed.
Clint Beyer’s 40 by 50 foot production shop is remotely located out in Forks, Washington. Clint grew up in manufacturing environment and has worked with machinery most of his life. An avid hunter and shooter, he was naturally attracted to gunsmithing and firearms product manufacture. Almost inevitably he began Beyer Barrels in 2006.
The barrels themselves are state-of-the-art, machined of 7075 aluminum, not the more usual 6061 T6. The lightweight aluminum barrel is then lined with a Chromalloy steel button rifled liner. Rifling in .22 LR is one turn in 16" which will stabilize heavy, subsonic bullets. Clint uses a proprietary method of installing and retaining the liner which enhances the accuracy of the barrels. This liner method in conjunction with the high quality aluminum barrel has been tested with full auto fire and is able to withstand the heat and stress, unlike some other lined barrels. The barrel-to-receiver shank is .001" oversize to ensure a perfect, tight fit with the receiver. The all-important front end of each barrel receives an 11 degree target crown. Barrels are available in various configurations including bull, middle weight, standard tapered and fluted. If you like attractive guns with some "bling" you will appreciate the variety of colors and finishes that are available. The barrels are not anodized, the most prevalent of aluminum finishes, but instead are finished with Cerakote, a ceramic finish which is very hard and durable.
Don’t expect to find all of the variations and finishes in the Brownells catalog. Instead, go to the Beyer Barrels website at Beyerbarrels.com, or better yet, put your hands on the product at one of our shows; this way you can speak directly with Clint Beyer and choose a barrel that best fits your 10/22 rifle concept. You can also just pick up the phone and call 360-640-1497 to order a barrel.
How good are these barrels? Any rifle builder knows that accuracy is dependent upon the ammunition, action, the stock and bedding, the quality of the trigger, and the sighting equipment. But the barrel is key to achieving maximum accuracy and Clint Beyer expects that rifles built with his barrels will group .5" or less at 100 yards. While this article emphasizes the 10/22, Beyer Barrels also makes AR barrels. Barrels can be purchased with ½" x 28 threaded ends for suppressors. All you .22 enthusiasts should check out Beyer Barrels at the next event but first start planning your next rifle building project, and call Clint to talk about options for this most popular of all .22 rifles

Comments about Standard Bull Barrel
Clint,
Just wanted to compliment you on a great product. You sold me a AR 22
bull barrel for a CMMG upper build. The accuracy and quality of the barrel
far exceeded my expectations. 25 rounds inside a "dime" at 40
yards......wow! Thanks,

After I sanded just the gunkote off the shank, the barrel went in nice but snug. Here's a picture of my wife's rifle and the first group shot after sight in. Sighted in with Aguila SE standard velocity (which the barrel didn't appear to particularly like. The picture is with the first 5 shot group with CCI standard velocity it ever shot. The distance was 25 meters with a dead stock Ruger trigger and no bedding of the action. Looks like she's gonna be a shooter. Trigger work is next. Thanks for the great looking barrel.
Mitch
PS: I'm sure my daughter is going to want a purple one now. LOL

Comments about Factory Taper
Hi Clint, I was able to test the barrel this weekend. Shoots great. Clover leaf hole five round groups (Wal-Mart Fed bulk pack at 15 Yds.) 1" at 25 yds but then I discovered my scope mount was loose so it can likely do a lot better than that. Also feeds and extracts Stingers fine as well. I don't use Stingers that often but am glad I can if I need to. Thanks again. PeteSource Email from customer

Comments about BEYER BARRELS RUGER 10-22 ULTRALIGHT TARGET BARREL:
"Bought one of Clint's barrels to put together an AR-22 project. Excellent one hole results at 50 yards. I was quite taken aback to find that it liked Rem thunderbolts better than any of the other 10 types of .22lr ammo I tried (including wolf, sk, Rem target, Win t22, and Fed gold metal). Don't misunderstand, all shot less than .5 in at 50, but when you can do it with ammo that costs $12 a brick, you can save the expensive stuff for matches."

Comments about Standard Bull Barrel
Clint: Thought you might want to see the finished gun. It came out great and shoots very accurate. It was a little breezy yesterday and I was still punching 3/4" tattered holes in the center of the target at 50 yds with 10 shots just using a sandbag on the bench. Awesome!!! The guns a lot lighter then any of my others so it a little harder to hold steady, but I'm getting use to it. Feel free to save and/or use the photos if it helps. I also did a facebook review and I mention your company name whenever possible on rimfirecentral.com and calguns.net. Hope it helps bring you some business. Thanks for the great barrel. "I just saw this Beyer 10/22 Ultralight Target Barrel at Brownells. It's getting great reviews.
Premium-quality aluminum alloy barrel gives the rigidity, stability, and performance of a steel bull barrel without the excess weight. Lets you build a tack-driving target rifle from an affordable, easy-to-obtain Ruger 10/22 action. Fully machined to precise, match-grade tolerances from exceptionally hard 7075 aluminum billet that's actually stronger than many mild steel alloys, yet gives all the benefits of a thick barrel, including improved heat distribution to resist accuracy changes due to barrel heating. Custom match chamber in .22 LR or .17 HM2, and button-rifled Chromalloy steel liner with precise 1-16" rifling for excellent accuracy, even from 60-grain subsonic .22 LR ammo. Barrel shanks are oversized to .001" and may require minor fitting; .17 HM2 barrel requires a heavy bolt or bolt handle assembly, available separately. Tough, durable, good-looking Cerakote™ ceramic finish resists corrosion, scratches, and surface wear. Recessed target crown protects the rifling at the muzzle.
SPECS: 7075 T6 aluminum barrel, Cerakote finish, matte black. Chromalloy steel liner. 18" (45.7cm) long, .930" (23.6mm) O.D. 1 lb. 2 oz. (510g) weight. Fits Ruger 10/22 .22 LR receivers only. Models chambered in .22 LR and .17 HM2. "

"I have 3 10-22's. One stock, one heavy barrel from XYZ, and one Beyer barrel 10-22. I though my XYZ HEAVY barrel was good, this one is even better and weighs nothing. Actually bought a complete 10-22 from Mr. Beyer at a gun show with a trigger job he did. All I have to say is wowow!! This gun out shoots my bolt action heavy barrel with an adjustable trigger. Can't wait to Gopher shoot with it!"

"Special Thank You to Clint Beyer of Beyer Barrels for making this build possible and to Redtazdog for doing all of the work from the middle including an incredible packing job on the barrel and collar. USPS did their part with Priority Mail getting it here. From the Far North West to the Far South East in only 2 days. The Barrel is 8", 0.865 ish diameter, between H-Bar and Bull. it has a thread protector in place on the business end and an extremely well fit dedicated collar on the chamber end. I will probably put the collar on a Ciener Conversion Bolt. Most of the ones I have are laying dormant lately. The fit and finish of the Barrel assembly is Superb. I don't know right now if I'll install a muzzle device or leave the thread protector as it is, kinda looks Cool. When installed in the upper receiver I have coming it should look 6-1/2" or 7" depending on who measures it. I got my package from Brownells about 11 AM today.. 1/07/2010 1 YHM Diamond Series Carbine Forearm and 1-1/16" ID End Cap. 1 DPMS AR-15 Competition Lo-Pro Upper Receiver. Nothing special happened during the build but it was a little difficult aligning the rail, anti-rotation screws. I believe that would have been easier if I'd just aligned it for the gas tube that it doesn't need. I wanted to run the the barrel with just the thread protector but the rail was too long. I added the Vortex Flash Hider and it just clears the end cap before it opens up. I used the dedicated collar with a Ciener that I has in a storage tube. Very tight collar to barrel fit after the collar was on the bolt assembly. Nice......................... Now to decide on a small optic???? And, Shoot It, hoping for this weekend or next Monday Night......"

"I am a gopher (sage rat) shooter in MT and have switched to this barrel from XYZ as I could not thread the carbon fiber barrel. It is as accurate as my old match bull barrel and light and accurate as my carbon fiber. I use Win Power Points and can burn a half to 5/8 hole 10 shot hole at 50 yards. I use it on a folding stocked 10/22 with 25 rd mags (grandkids reloading)and really like the lightweight and the rigidity in one. Good stuff...also have their .17 in 10/22 mag...incredibly accurate. Does not get better. Great chambering."Source Brownell’s Review

Comments about BEYER BARRELS RUGER 10-22 UL LIT BARREL/17 HM2 MATCH:
"I have two Beyer barrels, one in .22 and one in .17HMR. Both as accurate as the best chamber/barrels I have owned as a varmint getter...and I have owned the best (not supposed to mention names in reviews but retailing over $350 and worth it). My .17 has dime sized groups at a hundred yards and has killed a couple hundred dogs last spring in a 10/22 magnum. You won't go wrong.
BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend."Source Brownell’s Review
